ARTICLE: Escapist Indie Showcase Recap

*Has Yahtzee as the host* I didn’t know I wanted this.

It certainly surprised me when I saw that The Escapist did their own indie showcase and even more so that Yahtzee was the sorta-host (which already made it better than the PC Gaming Show haha). So many games were showcased here:

  • Windbound leaves you shipwrecked on an uncharted island and if you want to survive, you’re going to have to adapt, explore, and navigate the land. This is going to release on August 28, but you can pre-order now to get some exclusive in-game items.
  • Dreamscaper is a surreal roguelite inspired ARPG with modernized hack’n’slash combat thrown in for good measure. This is set to drop sometime this summer.
  • Nighthawks: The Vampire RPG is a text-based RPG set after the secret of Vampires was leaked out into the world. Of course, you’ll be playing as a new-ish vampire. Set to release early next year.
  • SpongeBob SquarePants Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated is a vibrant remake that was remade from the ground up with the help of being able to create the world exactly the same scale as the original. The new content includes a multiplayer mode (which includes content that was cut), a remastered soundtrack, improved visuals, and a new gameplay feel. This remake was possible thanks to the interest gathered by the speedrunning community and is out now.
  • Black Book is a dark RPG adventure based on Slavic myths where you play as a young sorceress. Set out to release next year.
  • Wave Break is a skateboarding game but with boats. This is planning to have a single player campaign, multiple multiplayer modes, and boat customization.
  • Stronghold Warlords is FireFly Studios’ latest castle sim where you get to command AI warlords, recreate castle economies of the Far East, and command Mongol hordes, imperial warriors, and samurai clansmen. This is set to drop on September 29.
  • Mayhem in Single Valley puts you back in your teenage years during the start of the Apocalypse in your hometown (which may or may not be your fault). This is set to release this year, but the demo is out now.
  • Ultrakill is a fast-paced ultraviolent retro FPS inspired by shooters from the 90s. This game will drop this summer, with the demo available right now.
  • The Riftbreaker is a base building survival game with action RPG elements where you play as an elite scientist/commando inside a mecha-suit capable of rift travel. This is planned to release sometime this year.
  • Project S.U.N. was announced by Hurrigame Studios that looks like it’s going to be half space exploration and half mission-based action adventure once you get to space stations or planets.
  • The Big Con is an adventure game about being a con artist during the 90s and trying to save your family video store. There is no set release date yet, but hopefully we’ll get a release window soon.
  • Drive Buy is a vehicular combat game where you try to outdrive and out deliver your rivals. This game will be delivered this July.
  • Deleveled is a jumping game… with no jump button. You’ll have to figure out how to send momentum from one block to another to solve the various puzzles. You can play this one this summer.
  • Paradise Lost puts you in the shoes on a 12 year old that finds a Nazi bunker while roaming a post-nuclear Polish wasteland. This is set to release sometime this year.
  • Jack Move is a gritty cyberpunk turn based RPG where you take the role of a vigilante hacker looking for her missing father. You’ll be able to play this next year.
  • There is no Light is a brutal action adventure set in a grim underground world ruled by Chruch of the Great Hand. You’ll be able to play this next year.
  • Lost Words: Beyond the Page is a 2D narrative adventure where you move words to solve puzzles. This is currently a Stadia exclusive, but it’ll be able to release everywhere else next year.
  • Keylocker | Turn Based Cyberpunk Action is set in a world where music is prohibited, but you’re going to rebel against it. There is sadly no release date yet.
  • Gamedec is a simgle player cyberpunk isometric RPG where you play as a game detective that solves crimes inside virtual worlds. This is set to release this year.
  • Breakpoint is a twin-stick slasher with exploding weapons set to release this year.
  • Hotshot Racing is a fast arcade style racing game that has retro visual, drift handling, and a sense of speed. This is set to release this summer.
  • Danger Scavenger is a fast paced action roguelike that’s cyberpunk themed. This is out now.
  • GTFO got a major update that added seven new expeditions, a new subcomplex, new enemy variations, new gear/consumables, and new surprised that will most likely kill you once you come across them.
  • Relicta is a physics based puzzle game where you need to combine magnetism and gravity. This is set to release soon on August 4.
  • ProtoCorgi is a reto styled shoot ‘em up arcade game with a cute little robo pup on a quest to save his owner. While there is no release date yet, you can play the demo now.
  • KeyWe lets you play as two small kiwi birds in this co-operative postal puzzler set to release next year.
  • Lucen sets you out to exlore unknown lands and fight the mythical beasts as you try to ask the old gods to restore light to your village. This will release next year.
  • El Hijo: A Wild West Tale is a spaghetti western stealth game where you guide a 6 year old boy to his mother.
  • Fallen Angel lets you become Lucifer as he’s aiming for Heaven’s throne. You’ll have to battle through angelic armies before you do though. This will release this fall.
  • A Juggler’s Tale is a unique game where you play as a string puppet in a poetic 3D adventure.
  • Perish is a four player FPS where you slay hordes of creatures on the sands of Purgatory and magnificent bosses to gain entrance to Elysium.
  • Beyond Blue is a narrative adventure set deep in the ocean. This is available now.
  • Haven is a RPG about two lovers that escaped to lost planet. You’ll be able to control both, or play with a friend, as you try to survive. This is set to release sometime this year.
  • Tower Princess is a #D action platformer with puzzles that gives you a quest to rescue princesses and princes. This will release next year.
  • Everspace 2 is a fast paced space shooter that promises deep exploration and a thrilling story set. This will enter Early Access this December, but you can play the demo now.
  • Resolutiion is a fast paced action adventure that lets you explore a fractured future as you’re escorting a curious AI. This is out now, but will soon be on GOG as well.
  • Hellpoint is an intense action RPG in a derelict space station hosting various creatures and cosmic gods. This has the release window of this year.
  • The Waylanders is a party-based RPG with a story inspired in Celtic Mythology. This is out in Early Access now.
  • Paradise Killer is a first person open world mystery where you play an investifation freak called Lady Love Dies.
  • Axiom Verge 2 is part of the same story as the first, but with new characters, powers, enemies, and new world. This will release on the Nintendo Switch later this year. You do not have to play the first game before getting this one.
  • Nanotale – Typing Chronicle is the spiritual successor to Epistory that puts you in the shoes of a young archivist venturing out in a dying world. You, of course, type your way through enemies. This is available now, but will also soon be on GOG.
  • Edge of Eternity follows Daryon and Selene on their quest to find a cure for Corrosin and features turn-based battles. This is out now, but is coming soon to GOG.
  • ScourgeBringer is a fast paced free moving roguelike platformer where you explore the unknown as Kyhra. This is out now in Early Access.
  • Remothered: Broken Porcelain, a follow up to Remothered: Tortured Fathers, sets out to introduce new gameplay, storytelling elements, and an unprecedented level of immersion in this haunting adventure. This is going to release August 25.
  • Black Skylands will let you explore endless skies, fight marauders and sky pirates, and gather unique weapons in a new world where the Earth was turned into floating islands. This will release later this year, but you can play the demo now.
  • Undungeon is a action RPG with real time combat that sets you out to restore order in the Multiverse. This will release later this year, but the demo is out now.
  • Chernobylite is a science fiction survival horror experience where you try to survive a 3D scanned recreation of Chernobyl. This game is out now.
  • Of Bird and Cage is a music-based action adventure releasing later this year.
  • Helheim Hassle is a narrative adventure with puzzle platforming elements where Bjorn, a pacifist viking, can detach and combine his limbs. Be ready to go back into the Manuel Samuel universe on August 18.
  • Destroy All Humans! will let you terrorize the people of 1950’s Earth as an evil alien. This will release on July 28.
  • Beyond the Wire is a multiplayer FPS set in the trenches of WW1 where battles will be up to 50v50. This is set to release this year.
  • Unto the End is a hand crafted cinematic platformer about a desperate journey home. This is set to release this year.
  • Sail Forth will let you explore beautiful scenery plagued by pirates that you’ll be able to battle with a fleet of ships. This will set sail this year.
  • Trifox challenges you to fight through swarms of enemies, boss fights, and environmental challenges to help restore your plundered home.
  • Bartlow’s Dread Machine is a dual stick arcade shooter featuring six game worlds and a cast of monsters and characters. This will release next month.
  • Minute of Islands will let you guide a younge mechanic on her quest to repair a world on the brink of collapse. This is set to release this year.
  • Trepang2 will feature brutal close quarters gunfights as you take revenge on your enemies. There’s no release date yet, but you can play the demo now.
  • Linked Mask puts you to the task of find six masks in six towers in this Game Boy era call-back. This will release this fall, with the demo available now.
  • The Last Spell is a turn-based tactical RPG with roguelite mechanics where you lead a team of hardened heroes. You can play this demo now.
  • We are the Caretakers is an afrofuturistic sci-fi squad management RPG where you defend endangered wildlife. This is set to release this year.
  • Gone Viral is an over the top action game with roguelite elements where you fight for your life in a prison arena.
  • Eldest Souls is a Soula-like where you play as a lone knight on a quest to slay the Gods and restore balance. Coming sometime this year with a demo out now.
  • Syntherapy is set in a world where you play as a psychotherapist on a job to help an advanced experimental AI. This is set to release this August, but you can play the demo now.
  • Grey Skies: A War of the Worlds Story is a tense stealth based thriller set in rural England where you play as Harper.
  • Out of Place puts you in the shoes of a teenager named Simon who suddenly finds himself in a destroyed world with an enormous ancient machine crashed into the mountainside.
  • Arboria is a dark fantasy roguelite where you play as a warrior descending into an everchanging Durnar and set to uncover the mysterious of their tribe. This is out now.
  • Skully takes place on a remote island where you play a skull that has washed up on shore. This is set to release on August 4.
  • Chicken Police is a buddy cop noir adventure with absurb humor where everyone are animals. Of course, you’ll be playing chicken detectives.
  • Figment: Creed Valley joins Dusty as you make your way through puzzles, musical boss fights, and unique enviornments. This will release later this year.
  • Dream Engines: Nomad Cities is a survival city building game with flying cities. This is set to release this year.
  • Garden Story appoints you as the new Guardian of The Grove, which gives you the responsibility of combating Rot, inspiring townsfolk, rebuilding homes, and traversing the land.
  • Raji: An Ancient Epic lets you play as a young girl named Raji after she’s chosen by the gods to stand against a demonic invasion. This is set to release later this year.
  • Unbound: Worlds Apart is a hand crafted metroidvania where you can conjure different magic portals (where each will grant you unique abilities). This will come out later this year.
  • Disjunction is a cyberpunk stealth action RPG set in the dystopian underworld of 2048 that will feature three playable characters. This is planning to release this year.
  • Quantum League is a time paradox competitive online FPS where you’re battling in a time loop as you’re teaming up with your past and future selves. This is out now.
  • HyperBrawl Tournament is a PvP arena battler for up to four players where your main weapon is your skill to Hypercurve. This is set to release this summer.
  • RÖKI is an adventure game inspired by Scandinavian folklore that follows Tove on a fantastical journey to save her family. You’ll be able to jump into this one on July 23.
  • The Way of Wrath is a story driven turn based tactical RPG set in a shamanistic world where you’re traooed in the ruins of an old fort.
  • Unfound is a story driven tactical stealth game where you take control of a deactivated robot who accidently woke up. You’ll be waking up in this work next year in March.
  • The SoulKeeper Chronicles is a dark open world RPG that will feature three single player campaigns with interwoven storylines. Each protagonist will geature their own game mechanics inside their own land to explore.
  • Art of Rally is a racing game set during the golden era of rally where you get to drive iconic 60s cars. This will come out this year.
